In India we consider men and women equal, this is the basic principle of our Indian constitution.
But in the structure of government we can clearly see the number of women in lok sabha(11%
women), rajya sabha(10.6% women) and state legislative assemblies which shows how women
are getting unequal opportunities at the dominant place.
The Women's Reservation Bill, 9 th March, 2010, is a pending bill in the Parliament of
India which proposes to amend the Constitution of India to reserve 1/3rd of all seats in
the Lower house of Parliament of India, the Lok Sabha, and in all state legislative
assemblies for women. The seats were proposed to be reserved in rotation and would have
been determined by draw of lots in such a way that a seat would be reserved only once in three
consecutive general elections.
There are many reasons why women representatives are less in the legislative body like lack
of opportunities, patriarchal mentality, wrong notions for women's abilities, prejudices about
POLITICS …
And even there are many prejudices about those women who are already in politics.
Women are always supposed to be at home and this is the reason why we are facing so many
difficulties to be equal.
When women representatives are in inadequate numbers in parliament or state legislative
assemblies, how can we expect much discussion for women in the legislative body of
government.
We need to increase the number of women in the legislative body so that we can have a good
balance in opinions . Otherwise Men will make all the rules and regulations for women as
happens in patriarchal society .
In 1993, a constitutional amendment was passed in India that called for a random one
third of village council leader, or Sarpanch, positions in gram
panchayat to be reserved
for women. There is a long-term plan to extend this reservation to parliament and legislative
assemblies. We need reservation for women in the legislative body so that we can expect
unbiased and fair laws.
